De vertekende Portugees
Op een rommelmarkt in Lissabon vond ik deze zomer twee foto's van een gezicht. Een man van middelbare leeftijd met een snor en een bril, grijzend bij de slapen, kijkt langs de camera. Geen opvallend gezicht, behalve dat hij een beetje gespannen lijkt, met zijn kaken op elkaar geklemd. Wel op de een of andere manier een echt Portugees heertje - zo'n Pessoa-hoofd zeg maar.
Het zijn twee lachfoto's. Hetzelfde portret, met een spiegel of zo vervormd. Op de eerste is de afbeelding breed uitgetrokken:
Op de andere is het beeld juist versmald:
Waarom zou hij die foto's hebben laten maken? Is hij na het werk even bij de fotograaf langs gegaan om zijn vrouw te verrassen? Zou hij er met zijn vrienden in de kroeg om hebben gelachen?
En hoe zou hij er op de originele foto uit hebben gezien? Die vond ik niet op de rommelmarkt. Maar met de moderne fotosoftware is het een koud kunstje de foto opnieuw te vervormen en zo een verloren gezicht terug te toveren. Ongeveer dan, hoe hij er echt uitzag - hoe breed de foto was - ik heb geen flauw idee. Komt dit in de buurt?
